Fluid-Salt Supplementation
The South African climate necessitates a sports person’s awareness and knowledge of fluid-salt supplementation.
During a workout that lasts around 30 minutes or so, the most important aspect is undoubtedly fluid-salt supplementation; however, it is one of the most often neglected. It has been shown that fluid loss of just 2% of body weight (1½kg in a person weighing 75kg) significantly reduces performance levels.
Essentially, one main way this can be counteracted is by being aware of your energy drink solution you are drinking during your sport.
Gastric evacuation is dependant on the mix of your carbohydrates (fructose & maltodextrin) versus water ratio. Optimal intestinal absorption occurs where the drink solutes are less than (Hypotonic) or equal to (Isotonic) the solutes in the blood. Where the solutes are higher (Hypertonic) availability of energy from those carbohydrates is drastically slowed down.
